Our first stop was the Northwest Wood Gallery. The most gorgeous things all hand made of wood. In fact, this month they are having a box and container competition. Check it out online. But here are a few of the amazing things we saw,
I really know nothing about wood working, but gosh it was so lovely. It was grand to be able to wander around all these beautiful wood products.

Our next stop on our journey was the crumpet shop, for a crumpet and a cup of tea. Mine was ricotta and lemon curd. In our group we also had one strawberry jam topping, one almond butter and honey and peanut butter and blackberry jam. Do you remember this place Caro?
It is really easy and feels like I can help out a bit, this way. (who among us doesn't have more than a few scrap strips?) I started with making 4 blocks and will send those off to the "assembler". Then I will re-register and make some more. Just taking it in small bites, so I'm sure to complete them.
What else? Last week-end we helped with some clean up, fix up, rip out and re-do at the Boat House. A former church member (she has since died) gave the church housing association an apartment building. She had been renting it out to "needy" folks for some years. It has now become part of the city's affordable housing program. We fix up the apartments as they become vacant and then they are rented out as low income/section 8 housing to families in need. Each apartment has at least 3 bedrooms (2 have 4), 1 bathroom, kitchen with space and living room/dining room. They are light and bright and really so attractive. I had often thought I'd love to live there. But here are the before photos. It will be a few weeks/months before the after photos are available.
Sunday the 6 year old grand had a birthday. It's easy to get forgotten when you are the last in line, and it was a bit difficult to share the limelight with the 1+ year old cousin who just learned to stand, but............
Rather a busy week around Casa Nana, so will catch up again soon.
Things have been clicking along pretty quickly, despite political turmoil. But we have all survived and here in Washington we even have a couple of new twists. We shall see how things turn out with same sex marriage, decriminaliztion of marajuana, charter schools - not to mention - we still don't know who our next governor will be. Hmmmm.

We had great fun last week-end (and I forgot my camera). We visited the farm (dogs, chickens, sheep) that one of our ministers keeps. The three bigger grands came along and we had a great time. We also pressed some apples for super fresh cider.

Been getting ready for colder weather. Got the winter quilts on the bed.
And the living room re-arranged. What the heck.
Not a big deal, but I enjoy letting things look a bit different, once in a while. And this way, it is easy to put the Christmas Tree in the front window. [How's that for planning ahead?] ;-)
It's an iPad mini. Just out. I have to make arrangements to attend some of the Apple workshops that help with using your Apple products. But so far, I do like it. The learning curve isn't quite as bad as when I first got my Mac (after many years with PC's). But it's great to take into the sewing room - I don't usually watch things, but I love having internet radio. Woo Hoo.

This is soup weather - so got this one going today. And we all know that homemade soup is better reheated, so this is actually for Saturday. Our church owns an apartment house which is made available to limited income families. At least one of the units is vacant, so there is a paint up/fix up day on Saturday. I sure won't feel like making supper after a day there, so this will be all set in the 'fridge for warming up.
Tomorrow is taking the motorhome in for winterizing before parking it for the "duration" (sigh!!!) and then a University of Washington Women's Basketball game. The Pac 12 doesn't actually start until January, but there are several pre-season games to get us all in the mood. Onward!
We are sometimes the rain city, but today for a few minutes we had blue sky and sunshine. Hurrah. I guess they got it all.
Saturday was a volleyball game for the oldest granddaughter. She has improved greatly,
They lost 2 games to 1, but all were in good spirits and ready to work more on their skills.

Some walking and enjoying the rain breaks on Sunday and today. Got a cover on the patio furniture, although it needed to be weighted down with a couple of bricks. There was so much wind!

Spent quite a bit of time today working on my free-motion quilting. I'm just not very good, coupled with a machine that doesn't always cooperate. And of course, I cannot locate my machine manual anywhere. Does that ever happen to you? I have turned over piles, searched the book shelves, looked in boxes - NOTHING. So finally called Pfaff today and asked about getting another copy of the manual. They were very nice and said they would send it online. That was at 11am this morning (after Jazzercise - what a good girl!). It arrived on my computer at 7:48pm. Now why did that take all day long to get here? I don't get it. But now I have a copy online and can look up their instructions for quilting. Now to order myself some thread. [I consulted with quilting friend Cathy about exactly which thread she uses. I had some of the right type even if it was the wrong colors.]

So free-motion quilting practice,
I made Snert - erwtensoep. (that's the Dutch) You know it as split pea soup. Yummy.
dried peas, onions, leeks, carrots and some ham. The original calls for celery, but I didn't have any, so celery salt had to do. Should be good.

And then using a King Arthur mix that I had, I made stollen. The package makes 2 loaves. We enjoyed some this morning for breakfast. This is normally a Christmas bread, but we are just anticipating what's ahead. Quite nice. Particularly because I'm not a big citron - candied fruit - person, I added raisins, craisins, dried cherries, apricots and pineapple. They were all soaked in a vanilla syrup, then added as required. (3 lbs!) A couple of raises and then bake.
Such a sad day. Not only is our camping season really over, our great traveling adventures must go on hiatus for a few months. Waaaaaaah! I know that I had thought for many years that I wanted to own and travel in a motorhome. It finally came true 10 years ago and I think I can honestly say that I have really, really loved it. It was all I wanted and even more [except for the water leak problems, but they are a thing of the PAST!] But now it's time to put on my "big girl panties" and admit that winter will be coming, perhaps soon. Alas.
Anderson's RV Park is a very nice park. One of our favorite places to stay. They even wrote us a "thank you" note after we arrived home - how often does that happen?

We were cozy in the clubhouse but enjoyed our banana splits on Saturday night,
Well, here we are on Tuesday. Saturday (a couple of days ago) my 9 y.o. grandson had a soccer game. It rained really hard at the start and we all thought "oh dear, this won't be pleasant" but it did stop after about 20 minutes. Thank goodness.
On Sunday I began a quilt I had seen in a magazine. I will have to go look for the woman's name who was the designer, but I loved it as soon as I saw it and knew it would be a PERFECT use of a large variety of asian fabrics I had. [Caro - do you have doggy fabrics left?] This would be a great use of any particular themed fabrics. Animals? Kids? Sports?
Finished the top, sans border, this afternoon. Black border to go around. It will be a very nice lap-sized quilt.

I also finished a Christmas gift for friends. Actually they will not even be at home for the holidays this year, but it's done for another year. Per Caro's suggestion, I used green binding.

This was so easy and a fantastic way to use up small pieces of left-over fabric.

This week-end is our last RV outing. So this afternoon we did a bit of shopping for items for this event, at Long Beach, WA. Taco fixings and ice cream sundae toppings. We've still to get some breakfast muffins and the ice cream will be a last minute purchase. Fingers crossed that the rains will hold off.
It was quite gray and cloudy this morning [although it did clear sometime after 2pm]. This morning we went for a wonderful walk across two small islands in Lake Washington (behind the University of Washington).

So enjoy the outlook,
We had a very pleasant outing to Orcas Island (in the San Juan Islands). I had never been there, so it was great exploring and learning about Orcas. So, a few photos:
I have also been doing a few sewing type projects, so I can share those. My sewing room is a mess, but I am finishing a few things. Hurrah.

CTA Christmas project for a foster children's program - we make and stuff Christmas stockings and this year, we're doing a fleece hat to include, as well.
CTA also makes small quilts for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Providence Hospital, Everett. We had a sewing day a couple of weeks ago where I almost finished one - brought it home to complete and two more kits.
And finally here's another "use it up" project. I have visualized this for some time and decided that I thought it would be fun. I'm quite excited because I think it meets the cute requirement - As of last night I had finished 10 strips - about 8-10 more to go,

All the blocks are put together with the sashing. Now just to add the small border and the larger border. Oh - yeah - I really like it
And Janet and a few other were so organized, at our last meeting they distributed, to all the members, a Christmas stocking to sew, as well as a polar fleece hat. Working on my stocking (waaaaay easy - may have to make some more for myself)

Add some decorations to the top and sew 'er up. [Working on the hat. Again, really easy.] When these are done they will be filled and donated to a local youth shelter. A nice project.

Another project we participate in is making quilts for the NICU at Providence Hospital, Everett. We have made bereavement quilts for babies who die. The nurses have asked for small quilts in which to bury the babies - if the parents wish for one. We have made enough of those to meet the needs for a while. We are now working on quilts for premies. One is for the baby's use and one for the mom. And then they are swapped, so each has the smell of the other. Kits are assembled by CTA and from time to time we have a "sew thoughtful" day. Friday we made easy, four patch quilts. (approx. 30 inches square)
And then, Monday we were off to a church retreat. It is such a beautiful facility - Rainbow Lodge. It is located in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, on 40 acres of lovely grounds. So a bit of what that looks like - enjoy
Behind the large window outside the restaurant you watch the dumplings being made. Very fun and they work REALLY fast. But then we sat down and understood why. We ordered a steamer of 10 juicy Pork Dumplings (pork dumplings sealed with soup inside). Oh yummy. Also ordered a round of vegetable & pork dumplings and of chicken dumplings. We shared some pork buns (not exactly like Hum Bow, but very tasty). But the absolute highlight of the meal was the sauteed broccoli with garlic and sauteed string beans with garlic. I cannot explain exactly why they were so fabulous, but they were so fresh, al dente, bright colored and so tasty. They are sauteed using Soybean oil (we asked the waitress) - just extraordinary. You could get kids to eat vegetables if they were fixed like this. And for dessert we had sesame dumplings - wonderfully rich and just a bit sweet.
Makes each day so cheering.
Around Casa Nana we have been doing several household type chores. E got these planted for us, for next year's enjoyment (we hope)
Won't that be so nice. Not sure if they are early or late or ???? Guess I'll have to check the garden book for these varieties.
Yesterday was a day of working on my buck-a-block blocks (say that a few times fast). Mostly Ronda and I did cutting and we did have to make a very fast "emergency" store run to get the right size of Thangles, but those are now in hand, so here's one down and 23 to go.
Hope I can spend some time today working more on this little project.

Tonight Dutch classes begin again. I haven't really looked at that for just months (literally) so it is sure to be a bit slow tonight. Hope Doug isn't too far ahead of me (there are only 2 of us in the class). I have read a few recipes in Dutch, but that doesn't really help my conversational skills. Jammer.

Tot ziens.
I know that most kids just love it, but so do some of us oldsters, too. We began with the requisite scone and coffee - yum. And then lots and lots of walking around to see things. We went looking for two paintings our friend Patty Anne had entered in the Fair. She didn't win any ribbons, but they were nicely displayed for all to enjoy.

There were 3 of us there and it was only afterwards that we saw the "No Photos" sign. Oh dear. I went to "check out" the quilts and will post some photos at the end (in case you don't care. Is that possible?) We found some lunch at a Greek outdoor restaurant,
and then walked through the Showplex. At our house it is called the "Slice and Dice" Building. It's where all the gadgets are. We didn't find much, but it is always fun to wander around. Nancy (pink shirt above) was in need of a new stuffed animal for her dog, so we wandered with her through all the 'game' booths - throwing and tossing and rolling, etc. She did win a very cute penguin for Ariza. [Two years ago it was a pink pig.] We ended the afternoon with a low calorie (?????) 'Elephant Ear' with cinnamon and sugar. Even sharing, we couldn't finish. [No rootbeer floats this year, Caro.]
Every day beautiful, beautiful sunshine. It always makes me feel so cheerful. [and a bit more energetic]

Found an interesting sounding dessert in a Diabetic Living magazine. It is called a custard, but I think it is more cakey. Applesauce, oatmeal, egg, butter, a finely chopped (unpeeled) apple - baked. When it is done, you top it with toasted pecans and powdered sugar. Oh yummy. 115 calories.
Nice little treat.

Saturday was hot and sunny. After soccer with my 5 yo granddaughter (quite funny to watch - although Miss M scored both of her team's goals! Yeah!) our friends came over with chainsaw in tow to help remove a tree. Our yard seems filled with plantings that have out-grown the space they are allotted. For example - see the tree in the middle. We are not entirely sure if it is a Juniper or a Spruce. Do you know from looking?

you can hardly tell anything is missing. After a bit of pruning on the camelia and lilac, you'll never know anything is gone. It is also fortunate that the neighbors have a vine maple up against their side of the fence, so it just fills in that empty space. Busy, busy, busy.

Phew!

Today it was gray and cloudy with temperatures 20 degrees less than yesterday. The TV is even saying maybe rain. First rain in more than 40 days.
This does NOT happen very often, so I must "crow" a bit.
Nana's Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05914789377060881572noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3555881584656281455.post-58888946352723031642012-09-06T09:40:00.006-07:002012-09-06T09:40:59.954-07:00Thursday bits and piecesI said I would show you what I found at GeeGee's. A truly amazing shop and just almost "over the top" for quilters and sewers.

#1 - I decided to use a background fabric I already had for my (way old) block a month program,
(see blog, Friday, June 8). Luckily I hadn't run out but it was approaching. And GeeGee's happened to have more - hurrah,

#2 I also found some of a fun little print. It would probably have worked if I ran out of the above.

Ronda and I have a date for a complete the blocks for our buck-a-block project. And I needed something for corner stones and found a great fabric, #3

[All this new fabric mandates that I REALLY get some things finished.] Also found some funny MahJong fabric - perhaps a little bag or something, #4

Over the week-end, I got a few belated birthday gifts - oh it is such fun to spread your birthday over several weeks (months?)

And what do you know - GeeGee's had something that went perfectly with the fat quarter pack, #5

I should point out that some of this fabric came from the 40% off corner, so I wasn't quite as out-of-control as it might seem. :-)
Is it true for everyone - September arrives and historically for each of us it has been the month of new beginnings: new clothes, new books, new pens and pencils, new classrooms, new teachers, new friends, etc. etc.? I am feeling very new "beginning-ish". Thus a new color on the blog. We had a great Labor Day week-end. Among other things, I helped several friends to accessorize an apron. We really had such fun working on this project. I had brought along lots of partial blocks that I had in a drawer, just collecting dust, as well as ribbons, crayons and some design ideas. Another friend had paints and stencils and pens. Great fun, really.

We ate, giggled, ate and then it was time to eat again. Oh my gracious so many good cooks. On Sunday we did visit GeeGee's for a bit of required fabric shopping. As I only get down to this shop once or twice a year, a visit was mandatory. I will show you what I bought. [Not so much.]

And then on our return today, we were invited to a BBQ at a friends' home. Her mother is here visiting from Kansas and she brought me some quilt blocks for my Dutch friend Caro - if she wants them. They are Sunbonnet Sue blocks, hand done on old sugar sacks. They date from approximately 1932.
Caro just needs to come and pick them up. [hint, hint]

Enjoy this new beginning.
I was so enamored with everything about it. It is a marvelous means of providing a non-judgemental listening presence. This will happen in the context of our church. We already have 5 people who are trained and working in this. Bill and I have both been trained to be leaders/administrators for the program, to join the 2 current folks and a new training session will begin in early October. It's all a-happenin'.

I got the binding finished on Paige's quilt (hurrah)
I finished washing and drying the baby quilt for Heidi and made the 8 privacy screens. [the church is providing housing and meals for 14 homeless mothers and their children during the next week. We do this once a quarter.] The idea is to create some sense of privacy in their sleeping quarters - considering they have to be washable, light controlling, and able to break down fully - it was something of a challenge. But I used a felt made in the USA from recycled pop bottles. Pretty good.
Walt made the frames from PVC. I finished one lavender sachet for Sherrie's birthday and that's it! Just been sitting around - NOT!
Tomorrow is pre-school shopping for the 2 oldest grands and Thursday it's babysitting for the littlest one (1 yo). Then on Friday we are off for our Labor Day Camping adventures. Life is not dull.
I had originally been signed up to attend last year, but it turned out that was when Caro was coming to visit. Interesting times ahead.
Nana's Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05914789377060881572noreply@blogger.com0
